Among the most celebrated examples of this tradition is a remarkable three-barrel cased set, manufactured by the Massachusetts Arms Company, and presented to Major Wynn in 1868. This bespoke collection, created by none other than Edward Maynard, a revolutionary figure in firearms innovation, remains an enduring testament to both technological progress and the valor of Union officers.
The Genius of Edward Maynard Edward Maynard (1813–1891) was more than just a firearms inventor; he was a visionary whose innovations shaped the evolution of military weaponry. A dentist by profession, Maynard’s passion for mechanical engineering led him to develop groundbreaking designs in firearms, most notably his patented breechloading system. Maynard’s most influential invention, the Maynard Tape Primer System, was patented in 1845. This ingenious mechanism allowed for a faster and more reliable ignition of gunpowder, replacing the older percussion cap system. Though its widespread adoption was limited due to mechanical complexities, his designs significantly influenced subsequent innovations in military firearms. “EDWARD MAYNARD” alongside patent dates—a subtle reminder of the mechanical genius behind its creation. The accompanying hardwood display case is as much a work of art as the firearms themselves. On its lid, the engraved initials E.G.M. (likely Edward G. Maynard’s monogram) signify personal craftsmanship. Inside, a presentation label reads: “THE MAYNARD SET PRESENTED TO MAJOR WYNN IN 1868. THESE GUNSETS WERE PRESENTED TO OFFICERS OF THE UNION ARMY WHO DISTINGUISHED THEMSELVES IN THE ARMED SERVICE DURING THE CIVIL WAR.” This presentation suggests the set was part of a limited series of gifts awarded to Union officers for exceptional service during the war, a prestigious recognition by Maynard himself.
